Elementary Programs

The SCIENCE WORKS! provides a wide range of educational programs for children and educators at all levels of educational development.  All of The Science Works’ programs have been designed to fall in line with the National Science Education Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards, presenting science in a way that not only educates, but engages and entertains children as well.  Each program includes some element of problem solving and some form of “discrepant event”, requiring the students to think critically and creatively in order to solve problems, create solutions, and move the program along.  Some of Steve’s most popular programs include:

  • The Magnet Museum (a hands-on magnetic learning lab that is set up for children to explore in)
  • Balls and Ramps (exploring what a ball is and how it works, as children sort and classify Steve’s ball collection, then set up their own tracks and raceways all over the classroom), and
  • The Water Collection (a series of water experiments that all look like regular water, but each demonstrates a different scientific principle of liquids depending on the shape of the container, what I add to the water, or how the water moves within it’s container).

Classroom enrichment programs from The Science Works fall into five categories, The Magic of Science, Collecting Science, Outside-In, In-Depth Investigations, and Scientist-in-Residency.

The Magic of Science Programs

Workshops designed to engage and excite children about the wonders of science using everyday phenomenon presented in extraordinary ways. Topics include:

• BUBBLES ALL AROUND (K-2)
• RAINBOWS AND COLOR (K-2)
• MAGNETIC MARVELS (K-5)
• WATER WIZARDRY (K-5)
• KITCHEN CHEMISTRY (K-5)
• MIRRORS AND KALEIDOSCOPES (K-5)
• OPTICAL ILLUSIONS (3-5)
• ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS (3-5)

Collecting Science Programs:
These workshops use Steve’s unique collections of materials and his engaging teaching style to help children uncover scientific theories and principles while “messing about” with science themes. Titles in this series include:

BOUNCING AND ROLLING (K-2)
SEASHELL-SCIENCE (K-2)
FLYING THINGS (K-2)
SOUNDS-AROUND (K-2)
WONDERFUL WATER (K-5)
THE MAGNET MUSEUM (K-5)
ROCKS AND MINERALS (K-5)

Outside In Progams:
Steve brings the great outdoors into the realm of the classroom with his nature based science series, making connections and fostering understanding of the physical and natural science worlds.  Programs include:

BILLIONS OF BUGS (K)
SNOWY SCIENCE (K)
BIRDS OF A FEATHER (K-2)
WEATHER WONDERS (K-2)
NATURE’S TREE-HOUSES (K-2)
SAND-SATIONAL SCIENCE (K-2)
TERRARIUMS (K-2)

In Depth Investigations:
These workshops provide more time for students  to work with a topic in-depth, through either a concentrated block of time, or over the course of a few weeks/months.  In these topics, students will work toward a larger goal of their own invention, a classroom/school hollow-tree-trunk-creation, a classroom “museum” with many exhibits, or a performance that the class works on as a group.  While the goal is product oriented, the process of getting there is integral to the learning that takes place, as students work through problem solving, the scientific method, and the design process, depending upon the topic and program they are undertaking.  These programs include:

NATURE’S TREE HOUSES (3-5)
THE INVENTION CONVENTION (3-5)
THE CLASSROOM SCIENCE MUSEUM (3-5)
THE GREAT SCIENCE MAGIC SHOW! (3-5)

A Scientist in Residency Program

Combining hands-on science workshops, auditorium performances and educator in-service programs, Stephen Lechner will become a “Scientist in Residence”, giving students and teachers the chance to engage in scientific inquiry though custom designed programs.  A residency may include:

  • A  Professional Development Program for the teachers prior to the start of the residency
  • A motivational Science “Magic” Show for the whole school to attend
  • Workshops with individual classrooms tailored to their curriculum topics
  • Consultation with the students and teachers to develop their own classroom or school-based science centers.

“Steve’s style is simply magic. He knows how to engage students by creating
situations that make children want to learn more. He is funny and always adds a
touch of humor to his lessons . He asks questions as he goes along and students
begin to wonder, to predict, and to understand why things work the way they do, or why they don’t. He breathes life into the simplest of science ideas.”
